AirRemote turns the iPhone, iPod Touch into remote controls

Section: iPhone + Communications, iPhone Accessories, iPhone, iPhone SDK & AppsUsing a mobile phone as a remote control is nothing new. Most of the advanced Nokia handsets have supported this feature for a while now. But then, it was limited to controlling mostly just TV sets. Surprisingly, we have not just a mobile phone, but a very popular portable media player which can actually do just that. Yes, I’m talking of the iPhone and the iPod Touch with the application known as the AirRemote. But wait, before you can use your iPhone or iPod as a remote control, you’ll need a piece of hardware called the Global Cache GC-100 Network Adapter, which will cost you $150. This is in addition to the price of the AirRemote, which will be a good $100 when it comes out in the Apple store. If you don’t mind spending $250 just to turn your iPhone or iPod Touch into a univesal remote control, these devices will let you control some home automation systems such as AMX and Creston, which can be used to hook up your lighting, security, audio/video systems and thermostats. Do I need to say that those home automation system would definitely cost a lot too? Of course, the AirRemote application would appeal to those iPhone or iPod users who are already using said automation systems in their homes. But, for us mid-income earning techie individuals, I guess an ordinary universal remote control will have to be enough for our needs. iTunes 7.7 to include remote control capabilities?

Along with the new iPhone SDK 8 beta that came out tonight, Apple also shipped a pre-release version of iTunes 7.7 to developers in the iPhone Dev Program. iTunes 7.7 is a requirement for the new iPhone 3G and iPhone 2.0 firmware; it also appears to include a new remote control feature. According to an anonymous tipster, iTunes 7.7 will allow either an iPhone or iPod touch to download a free application that can remote control iTunes from anywhere in the vicinity of your Mac (most likely over your home network). Reportedly, this free application will be available in the App Store upon the 2.0 firmware release. As we cannot confirm nor deny this tip, take it with a grain of salt until we get official word from Apple. However, as you may recall, we hinted about this capability a while back. Thanks, (redacted)!Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Switched On: From Bluetooth to the bedroom and the backyard

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about technology, multimedia, and digital entertainment. Last year, Switched On discussed the KeySpan TuneView and the DLO HomeDock Remote, two products that allowed remote control of an iPod using small screens on a remote. One of the limitations of those products was that they each required their own docks instead of working with any of the scores of iPod docks already on the market. At CES 2008, though, a company showed a product that not only allows you to use your iPod -- and many other devices -- as a wireless remote with the iPod dock you may already have. Even more unusually, the company that sells it is not one well associated with these speaker docks, such as Altec Lansing, Bose or Logitech, but rather It is iSkin, a company that made its name selling silicone cases for iPods. iSkin's music product line is called Cerulean, the most flexible configuration of which is the $129 TX+RX (transmitter / receiver). The transmitter, like those bundled with iPod wireless headphones for years, allows you to use your iPod as a remote, sending music to any Bluetooth stereo speaker. But not only does Cerulean free the iPod from the dock, it frees the dock from the iPod. Plugging the Cerulean Bluetooth receiver into practically any iPod dock opens a door for many Bluetooth stereo music sources -- such as MacBooks and notebook PCs, digital music players from Sony and Samsung, and many cell phones. When used with a subscription service such as Rhapsody, the Cerulean lets you create playlists from thousands of songs or listen to YouTube music videos on your notebook with better audio quality, but there's even one more trick up its sleeve.Continue reading Switched On: From Bluetooth to the bedroom and the backyardPermalink | Email this | Comments
