LogMeIn Ignition promises remote screen sharing from iPhone

If you've got a far-flung assortment of computers to manage, there are some great zero-config paid and install-a-client-first free options out there -- including the cross-platform hosted approach of LogMeIn. The LogMeIn Free client runs fine on Mac OS X, and the web-based control UI is capable; but how delightful would it be to take that same capability and stick it in your pocket? Very delightful.LogMeIn has begun accepting applications for the private beta of LogMeIn Ignition for iPhone/iPod touch, the mobile client version of the remote control platform. With a final release planned for the end of the year, the client will allow full remote control of any computer in your list, including screen blanking and zoom/pan options. While there are great IT admin tools for other mobile platforms (and some promising but never-completed iPhone tools), the iPhone admin explosion hasn't quite arrived yet. LogMeIn is definitely an industrial-strength player and the presence of the client will help to legitimize the iPhone and iPod touch as an enterprise device. Thanks Shannon[via MacTech]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

iLuv ships combo DVD/iPod player, gives it boring name

Section: iPod + iTunes, iPod Accessories, Docks & Speakers iLuv, a company that specializes in “developing solutions and unique accessories for the Apple iPod and other MP3 players” has just released a new multimedia system that promises to bring all your media formats to one place. The i1255 (couldn’t they have thought of something a little more creative?) is a 5.1 channel desktop DVD and iPod player that lets you play music and movies on your TV and includes an attractive “On-Screen-Display” that lets you navigate your iPod’s music and movies with ease. The actual player bears a striking resemblance to a Playstation 3. iPod features of the i1255 include an integrated dock that lets you charge and play your ipod, full screen control/navigation of your iPod with the included remote control, and the ability to output your favorite iPod movies through s-video or AV outputs. iPods that are compatible are the iPod touch, iPod classic, iPod nano 3G and iPod with video. The DVD feature of the i1255 gives you all of the features you would expect in a standard DVD player: DVD playback, VCD, MP3 and JPEG playback are included. The “On-Screen-Display” is also used with the DVD features to navigate MP3s, etc. stored on your DVDs. The i1255 includes a remote control, AV cable, warranty card, quick-start guide, and instruction manual, and is available now for $149.99. iPhone iRobot control

A while back we showed an iPhone being used to control some remote control planes through MobileSafari. Now some researchers at the University of South Florida have taken the idea to the next step with a native iPhone application to control an iRobot PackBot. As the above video demonstrates, the iPhone not only allows them to direct the PackBot, but even displays video from the robot's on-board camera. The iPhone connects directly to the PackBot via wifi and does not require a proxy machine or even an access point. Apparently the next step is to use the iPhone's accelerometers to control the movement by tilting, with video from the camera displayed full-screen. They're also going to use touch controls for zooming and panning the video. It's a cool proof of concept; somehow, though, I don't think this one will be appearing on the App Store anytime soon. Found footage: Using an iPhone to control reconnaissance aircraft

The clever folks at UC Berkeley have developed a system to issue commands to unmanned aerial vehicles using a device we all know and love: the iPhone. While the iPhone is specifically restricted from piloting the drones themselves, the team uses Mobile Safari on the iPhone to enter coordinates and select tasks for its airborne fleet. A web server then relays the tasks to the aircraft mid-flight. The video shows, in real time, an exercise where a remote-controlled airplane is instructed to photograph a particular area underneath it. The photo is then transmitted wirelessly back to a workstation at ground control. While not quite James Bond-level technology yet, it's certainly an extreme study in using the iPhone as a remote control. [Via Hack a Day.]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
