Apple rolls out iDVD 7.0.2

Section: Apple News, Updates, Software + Apps, iLifeOpening day of WWDC ‘08 appeared to kick off a string of software updates from Apple. Quicktime was updated to Quicktime 7.5 and iMovie has been updated to iMovie 7.1.2. Following close behind was an update to iDVD ‘08, which has been updated to iDVD 7.0.2. The download is 20.27MB. Logging onto Apple’s support page, you’ll find that the update “fixes general compatibility issues, improves overall stability, and addresses a number of other minor issues.” However, if you are searching for additional information about the update, Apple isn’t talking about it. I’ve found that annoying, and always wished Apple would release more information about its updates. iDVD users saw many additional features added to iDVD ‘08, including: Ten new animated themes Better performance Advanced menu customization Stunning slideshows Pro-quality encoding

What iDVD '08 Compression Options Really Mean

Every time I've used iDVD '08 and reached the point of checking the Project Info pane's Encoding options, they never make complete sense, even after searching the web for answers. I'm in the process of transferring my Laserdiscs to DVDs and have now built up enough experience that I think I've figured this all out. There is the quality of the rendered video to be burned on the DVD, which is really what is important. But, unfortunately, the word quality also appears in the naming of the compression algorithms used, Best Quality and Professional Quality. This latter use is ill-advised, because the amount of compression applied to your video may or may not affect the quality of the video you end up with.We all understand the meaning of picture quality, and iDVD '08 usefully indicates final DVD video quality via a color grading scale, from g...

Apple to introduce dedicated movie chips?

Section: Apple News, Rumors, Updates, iPod + iTunes, Apple TV, iTunes, Movie Rentals, Mac + Computers, Desktops, iMac, Mac mini, Mac Pro, Laptops, MacBook Air, MacBook, MacBook ProNow that we’re pretty certain something is in the pipes for a September Apple event, let’s start sifting through rumors. One notable rumor has to do with possible changes to the inner workings of certain Macintosh Laptops and Desktops. For a long time, Apple has been regarded as the company to go to if your computing needs fall in a more creative range than what is offered with a PC. At the top of that list for creative computing needs is movie making. With Apple’s many applications just for this (iMovie, iDVD, Final Cut, Shake), Apple has taken out (most of) the guesswork when it comes to putting your clips into a polished home movie. Now, should these rumors prove to be true, Apple may hope to go the extra mile when it comes to ease of use for their movie editing software. According to a tip given to Silicon Alley Insider, certain higher end Macs, and possibly all Macs, will receive a few new chips that would be dedicated to nothing but video decoding and encoding. Other rumors, dealing with HD Video Chatting and Hi-Def movie rentals not just on Apple TV but on regular computers, support the possibility of the new chipsets becoming a reality this coming September.
