Ask TUAW: Display rotation, iTunes libraries, Time Machine backups, screen sharing and more

April 1, 2008

This time in Ask TUAW we'll be taking questions about screen rotation, managing iTunes libraries, transferring Time Machine backups to new machines, screen sharing, application deletion and more.

As always your suggestions are most welcome, and questions for next week should be left in the comments. When asking a question please include which machine you're running and which version of OS X, as certain answers will vary between different Macs and Tiger vs. Leopard, etc. (we'll assume you're running Leopard if you don't specify). And now, on to the questions!

AirRemote turns the iPhone, iPod Touch into remote controls

Section: iPhone + Communications, iPhone Accessories, iPhone, iPhone SDK & AppsUsing a mobile phone as a remote control is nothing new. Most of the advanced Nokia handsets have supported this feature for a while now. But then, it was limited to controlling mostly just TV sets. Surprisingly, we have not just a mobile phone, but a very popular portable media player which can actually do just that. Yes, I’m talking of the iPhone and the iPod Touch with the application known as the AirRemote. But wait, before you can use your iPhone or iPod as a remote control, you’ll need a piece of hardware called the Global Cache GC-100 Network Adapter, which will cost you $150. This is in addition to the price of the AirRemote, which will be a good $100 when it comes out in the Apple store. If you don’t mind spending $250 just to turn your iPhone or iPod Touch into a univesal remote control, these devices will let you control some home automation systems such as AMX and Creston, which can be used to hook up your lighting, security, audio/video systems and thermostats. Do I need to say that those home automation system would definitely cost a lot too? Of course, the AirRemote application would appeal to those iPhone or iPod users who are already using said automation systems in their homes. But, for us mid-income earning techie individuals, I guess an ordinary universal remote control will have to be enough for our needs. Review: Altec Lansing T612 Digital Speaker System for iPhone and iPod

When the portable inMotion speaker designers at Altec Lansing released the non-portable M602 Digital iPod Speaker System a year and a half ago, the appeal was obvious: as a combination of metal-grilled speakers and an iPod dock, M602 offered an audio experience close to the popular, similar Bose SoundDock at two-thirds the price, with added versatility in the form of bass and treble adjustments, video-out, line-in, and USB sync features, as well as…

Apple Posts Firmware Updates for Keyboards, MacBooks, and iMac

Section: Apple News, Updates, Mac + Computers, Desktops, iMac, Laptops, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Peripherals, Keyboards, Operating Systems, OS-X Apple today released Firmware Updates for the Intel iMac, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Aluminum Keyboard. The firmware updates are available at apple.com and through Software Update. They “[fix] several issues to improve the stability of [the] computers.” The keyboard update addresses an issue with keys repeating themselves wittttttttttttthout warning. Firmware Updates require a restart and the keyboard update renders your keyboard useless for as much as 5 minutes while it installs, then it, too, requires a restart of your computer. Follow the instructions (usually “Quit Everything, Touch Nothing") to the letter, other wise your computer may get messed up. Potentially REALLY messed up. Oddly, I downloaded the Firmware Update for my MacBook Pro manually, as Software Update didn’t find it and it told me I didn’t need the update. Is this happening to anyone else?
