AirRemote turns the iPhone, iPod Touch into remote controls

Section: iPhone + Communications, iPhone Accessories, iPhone, iPhone SDK & AppsUsing a mobile phone as a remote control is nothing new. Most of the advanced Nokia handsets have supported this feature for a while now. But then, it was limited to controlling mostly just TV sets. Surprisingly, we have not just a mobile phone, but a very popular portable media player which can actually do just that. Yes, I’m talking of the iPhone and the iPod Touch with the application known as the AirRemote. But wait, before you can use your iPhone or iPod as a remote control, you’ll need a piece of hardware called the Global Cache GC-100 Network Adapter, which will cost you $150. This is in addition to the price of the AirRemote, which will be a good $100 when it comes out in the Apple store. If you don’t mind spending $250 just to turn your iPhone or iPod Touch into a univesal remote control, these devices will let you control some home automation systems such as AMX and Creston, which can be used to hook up your lighting, security, audio/video systems and thermostats. Do I need to say that those home automation system would definitely cost a lot too? Of course, the AirRemote application would appeal to those iPhone or iPod users who are already using said automation systems in their homes. But, for us mid-income earning techie individuals, I guess an ordinary universal remote control will have to be enough for our needs. Patent filing shows DVR for Apple TV

Gallery: Apple TV DVR patent filingEarlier this week, AppleInsider reported on an Apple TV patent filed in 2006 and just published; it shows DVR features, and the patent also includes a feature where the iPod could be docked with the Apple TV to sync content for on-the-go viewing. "For example, program data for upcoming programs, e.g., for the next month, can be downloaded and stored on the remote control device," Apple said in the patent. "Thereafter, a user of the remote control device can search programs that are to be broadcast and determine which programs to record. The recording settings can be programmed onto the remote control device, and then be provided to the video device when a data communication is established between the remote control device and the video device."If Apple was to implement this into the Apple TV, it could definitely bring a game-changing device to the TV industry. Who knows, it could become a direct competitor to the TiVo. Be sure to look through our gallery of patent filing pictures. [via AppleInsider]Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
