Review: Final Cut Server 1.1

Final Cut Server is a client-server-based workflow tool that can potentially help you in three ways: in cataloging and searching assets, especially video-based assets; with version control through check-in and check-out capabilities and approval; and with automation capabilities to convert, copy, and execute scripts.

Apple updates Final Cut Express; improved stability and plugin support

Section: Apple News, Updates, Software + Apps, Video, Mac + Computers, SoftwareMac users who use Final Cut Express received an update to their movie editing software on Thursday. Apple has released Final Cut Express 4.0.1. Those used to seeing the brief support notes that usually accompany Apple releases will be surprised at the detailed notes that accompany this update. The three main fixes are:  Permission issues resolved Occasionally Final Cut Express wouldn’t open projects that included media that users did not have proper permission to access with this update Final Cut Express is now opening the projects correctly. AVCHD Easy Setups Final Cut Express Users will notice improvements within AVCHD. AVCHD now includes Easy Setups which support the ingesting AVCHD footage using Apple Intermediate Codec. The Easy Setups are: AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080i60 AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i60 AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1440x1080i50 AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1920x1080i50 Improved plugin support and stability Final Cut Express is an excellent DV editing software package. It’s a great choice for users looking for advanced video editing capabilities that cannot be found in iMovie. I upgraded to Final Cut Express shortly after purchasing my MacBook Pro. Although I enjoyed iMovie, I found I wanted more options than were available. For users who are looking for additional features that aren’t available in Final Cut Express they can purchase Final Cut Pro. I’m a Final Cut Express user. Thanks to this valuable application I’m able to create professional quality videos at the fraction of the price of Final Cut Pro. The learning curve can be steep, especially if you’re new to video editing. I mainly use Final Cut Express to take videos of my daughter and family. My daughter started school this year, so I will definitely be working overtime considering all the activities that are planned at her school. The Final Cut Express 4.0.1 download file weighs in at 122 MB. Via [Apple.com] Full Story » | Written by Opal Tribble for Appletell. | Comment on this Article »

Final Cut Server released

After countless delays and the cancellation of Apple's booth at NAB 2008 (which starts next week), many of us assumed Final Cut Server would never materialize. However, today's store-closing Tuesday update changed all of that, and the product is out and available immediately. It's nearly a year late (it was announced at NAB 2007), but we'll take it!Apple's press release describes Final Cut Server as, "a scaleable server application...allows searching across multiple disks and SAN volumes and enables viewing, annotation and approval of content from anywhere using a PC or Mac(R)."The cross-platform nature of the client software is a huge win for production houses that are not fully Mac-ified. Even if your whole production suite is Mac, being able to login from a PC to search media clips or access media from a PC in your Final Cut workflow has great potential.Read on for the rundown of the specs and system requirements for the server and client software.Continue reading Final Cut Server releasedRead | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Final Cut Server Released

Section: Apple, Apple News, Software + Apps, Video, Operating Systems, OS-X, WindowsAfter its many delays, Final Cut Server is finally here. Apple’s online store had a short downtime today, and resulted in Final Cut Server being released. After its announcement at the NAB 2007, Final Cut Server is now available from Apple’s online store and Apple retail stores for $999 (10-client), and $1999 (unlimited client licenses). For those that don’t know what I’m talking about, Final Cut Server is “a scaleable server application...allows searching across multiple disks and SAN volumes and enables viewing, annotation and approval of content from anywhere using a PC or Mac®.” The system requirements are as follows: Server: 1.8 G5 PowerPC or an Intel Core Duo, Core 2 Duo or Xeon (Intel recommended) OS X 10.5 or later 2 GB of RAM (4 GB recommended) AGP or PCI Express Quartz Extreme graphics card (Final Cut Server is not compatible with integrated Intel graphics processors—if you need to run a mobile production server, you need to be on a MacBook Pro) 500 MB of disk space Mac Client: 1.25GHz or faster PowerPC G4, PowerPC G5, Intel Core Duo, Intel Core 2 Duo, or Intel Xeon processor 1GB of RAM AGP or PCI Express Quartz Extreme graphics card (Final Cut Server is not compatible with integrated Intel graphics processors) A display with 1024-by-768 resolution or higher Mac OS X v10.4.11 or later QuickTime 7.4.1 or later Java for Mac OS X v10.4 Release 6 or later Final Cut Pro 6.0.2 or later for Final Cut Pro integration 20MB of available disk space Windows Client: A PC with Windows XP (SP2) or Vista 1GB of RAM AGP or PCI Express Quartz Extreme graphics card (Final Cut Server is not compatible with integrated Intel graphics processors) A display with 1024-by-768 resolution or higher QuickTime 7.4.1 or later Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 4 or later 20MB of available disk space The system requirements clearly state that Intel integrated graphics (e.g. GMA 950 or X3100) are not compatible with Final Cut Server. Which is not surprising, considering that Intel’s integrated graphics are not capable of much video rendering or gaming. Most professionals are most likely to be using Mac Pros and MacBook Pros, anyway - so there should be no problems there.
