AirRemote turns the iPhone, iPod Touch into remote controls

Section: iPhone + Communications, iPhone Accessories, iPhone, iPhone SDK & AppsUsing a mobile phone as a remote control is nothing new. Most of the advanced Nokia handsets have supported this feature for a while now. But then, it was limited to controlling mostly just TV sets. Surprisingly, we have not just a mobile phone, but a very popular portable media player which can actually do just that. Yes, I’m talking of the iPhone and the iPod Touch with the application known as the AirRemote. But wait, before you can use your iPhone or iPod as a remote control, you’ll need a piece of hardware called the Global Cache GC-100 Network Adapter, which will cost you $150. This is in addition to the price of the AirRemote, which will be a good $100 when it comes out in the Apple store. If you don’t mind spending $250 just to turn your iPhone or iPod Touch into a univesal remote control, these devices will let you control some home automation systems such as AMX and Creston, which can be used to hook up your lighting, security, audio/video systems and thermostats. Do I need to say that those home automation system would definitely cost a lot too? Of course, the AirRemote application would appeal to those iPhone or iPod users who are already using said automation systems in their homes. But, for us mid-income earning techie individuals, I guess an ordinary universal remote control will have to be enough for our needs. TUAW Review: Richard | Solo Smart Backup Battery for iPhone / iPod

If there's anything I've learned about the iPhone 3G since July 11th, it's that the battery life is horrible. If I'm just texting and making the occasional call, I can survive for a day, but if I try to play games or use 3G I know it's going to go to the dreaded red battery icon quickly. That's why there are a growing number of manufacturers who have extended battery packs for the iPhone on the market. For example, I looked at the Kensington Mini Battery Pack and Charger (US$49.99), but the website doesn't show that it works with the iPhone 3G. My next choice was the Richard | Solo Smart Backup Battery. This US$49.95 lithium-ion battery pack has saved me from running out of juice prematurely more than once! Read on for more information about this must-have sidekick for the iPhone 3G.Continue reading TUAW Review: Richard | Solo Smart Backup Battery for iPhone / iPodRead | Permalink | Email this | Comments
